Volkswagen Polo over the years

The Volkswagen Polo was unveiled to motorists in 1975 after Volkswagen decided to release another small hatchback after the success of the Mark I Golf. The first generation Polos were far removed from the ones we’re familiar with today. For one, they had a much smaller wheelbase—so small, in fact, that they were shorter than the modern-day Volkswagen Up!

Lasting for 6 years to buy new, the first generation Polo was popular for a first attempt, with half a million sold worldwide. What helped the sale of the Polo was the varied range of paint colours Volkswagen offered buyers. These paint colours included Alpine White, Signal Orange, Citrus Yellow and Brilliant Red.

Riding off the back of the success of the first generation Polo, Volkswagen released the second generation in 1981. Looking different to the first generation by removing its design further away from the Audi 50 (that the first generation Polo was based on), Volkswagen had now sold two million Polos by 1984. To assist with the shifting sales, Volkswagen offered buyers of the second generation Polo in paint colours like Tornado Red, Silver Metallic and Azur Blue

In 1994, Volkswagen made the third-generation Polo available to buyers. It was the first time we saw a more streamlined design that started to resemble the Polos of today. This generation was also the first time Volkswagen offered a GTI version of the Polo. Paint colours like Candy White, Mystic Blue Pearl, and Flash Red were options for buyers of the third-generation Polo.

After many more generations, we are presently on the seventh generation of the Volkswagen Polo. A far cry from the original Polo, this generation has advanced technology such as travel assist and animated indicator lights. Deep Black, Kings Red, Vibrant Violet and Reef Blue are all paint colours Volkswagen currently offer for the seventh generation Polo in 2024.
