BMW 5 series over the years

Released in 1972, the BMW 5 series has naturally seen a lot of change since its introduction over 50 years ago. Marking BMW’s return to the premium automotive market, there was a lot of weight resting on the shoulders of the 5 series, with BMW eager to see sales do well. Now, with eight generations and an array of BMW paint colours later, it's safe to say that the 5 series completed what it was made to do—cement BMW as a serious upmarket car manufacturer once again.

The formative years of the 5 series were characterised by a long, rectangular but stylish and unique-looking exterior. Under the bodywork, there has always been exciting mechanics with the 5 series, like BMW’s first turbodiesel engine on the second generation (released in 1981), and a powerful V8 engine on the third generation 5 series, which was released in 1988.

Early generations of the BMW 5 series offered plenty of choice in paint colours. For example, buyers had paint colour options like Polaris Silver, Chamonix White, and Fjord Blue when looking to buy the first generation. As for second and third generations, motorists who were looking to buy a brand new BMW 5 series could choose from paint colours like Arctic Blue, Zinnober Red, Alpinweiss, and Calypso Red

In more recent times, the sixth generation was the last to offer a high-performance engine, featuring a twin-turbo V8. Since then, the BMW 5 series has shifted towards environmentally friendly yet innovative technology, with the seventh and eighth generations (the most recent generation as of 2024) both offering hybrid power chains, which were not seen previously. Paint colours for the most recent generations include Alpine White, Phytonic Blue, Cape York Green and Brooklyn Grey
